Android or Windows: Where Does Your Software Run?
There is one test when choosing the OS for a price checker: what form the store software takes. A web page or Android app means the Android model, which boots quickly and is simple to maintain remotely. A Windows client, a serial driver or ActiveX controls means the X86 model. Both versions share the same screen sizes, housing and mounting holes, so the OS choice does not change installation.
Seven Factors Compared
| Factor | Android model (Android 11 / Linux) | Windows model (Windows 10 / 7 / 8) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical software form | Web page (WebView or browser), Android app, H5 lookup page | Windows desktop client, .NET program, legacy system with ActiveX |
| Boot to ready | Faster; the app comes up directly after power-on | Slower; a cold boot is usually around 30 seconds, depending on how trimmed the system is |
| Remote maintenance | App-level updates only; few system changes | Remote desktop and image deployment are available, but the system needs protection from accidental changes |
| Peripherals and drivers | USB HID keyboard emulation, serial port (by model), network | Serial, printer and card reader drivers are all available, so compatibility is wider |
| System lockdown | A dedicated launcher can hide the desktop and settings | Restricted account plus Unified Write Filter (UWF) |
| Unit cost | Lower | Higher (mainboard and license) |
| Mainboard | RK3566 quad-core 1.8GHz, 4G+64G | J1900 / J4125, 4G+64G or 8G+128G |
A Third Option: Linux
The 802 series can run Linux 4.19 or Debian. It suits two kinds of buyers: integrators whose own software runs on Linux and who want a lighter system, and sites that want the system locked down to a single full-screen application. The trade-off is that peripheral drivers must be confirmed by the customer, and troubleshooting takes more effort than on Android or Windows.
Without an established Linux stack, we do not suggest choosing it just to save resources. Android is already light enough, and its ecosystem and debugging tools are more complete.
Questions About the OS
Can the Android model install third-party apps?
Technically yes, through an APK install, but for a public-facing unit we suggest installing only the price checker app, setting it as the default launcher and hiding the system interface. Every extra app adds a failure point.
Can the Windows model catch viruses?
Public units do carry that risk. The usual measures: no internet access or an allowlist of required domains, a restricted account, Unified Write Filter enabled so a restart restores the original state, and USB autorun disabled.
Can the Android model update the price list remotely?
Yes. The back-end system can push the price list and the app can pull it on a schedule, or you can use a local cache with incremental updates. The software side implements the mechanism; the hardware supplies network and storage.
Are the two versions interchangeable?
At the same size, the Android and X86 versions share the housing and mounting holes, so they are interchangeable. The OS is fixed at order time, though, and changing it later means replacing the whole unit.
How is the Windows license handled?
Units ship preinstalled to the ordered configuration, with license type and quantity confirmed on the order. If you supply your own license, we can ship a version without the OS; please discuss the details with our sales team.
